We can now confirm that the ‘Adopt a Monument’ team from Archaeology Scotland will be returning to undertake a full archaeological excavation of our Creag Liath (Grey Stones) historic site from Monday 25th September to Friday 6th October 2023. The investigation will hopefully provide clues as to whether the site was a pre-historic shieling or, as some suspect, a small neolithic or bronze age settlement.
The team will be looking for lots of volunteers during their two-week visit, so if you fancy getting mucky for some or all of the investigation then please e-mail info@stronafianforest.org.uk for more details.
An Open Day will be held on Saturday 30th September, where visitors can view the site, chat to the archaeologists and discover how the dig is progressing. There will also be information about the past excavations at the nearby Auchategan pre-historic settlement that were undertaken back in the late 1960s.
We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of Archaeology Scotland and the Cruach Mhor Windfarm Trust for making this professional investigation possible, and for helping us to assess, interpret and preserve our wonderful pre-historic heritage.
